New York, Mar 13 (EFE).- The Uzbek Sayfullo Saipov will serve life imprisonment for the death of 8 people (5 of them Argentines) in 2017 in New York and for his collaboration with the Islamic State terrorist group, after the jury did not achieve unanimity to sentence him to death, according to the local press on Monday.
Saipov was found guilty at the end of January for the deaths of 8 people whom he rammed with a truck, and after that the jury had to decide whether to impose the death penalty, as requested by the Department of Justice at the time of his indictment, under the Administration of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021).
But capital punishment must be pronounced unanimously, failing that, the defendant only serves life imprisonment.
