Oviedo (EFE).- The simultaneous operation carried out yesterday, Thursday, by the Civil Guard in various points in Asturias, including Gijón, within an investigation against the illegal trafficking of eels has resulted in four detainees, as reported by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Principality
The Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested the Pravia Court of First Instance and Instruction, which maintains the proceedings under summary secrecy, for the entry into provisional prison, communicated and without bail, of one of the four detainees.
In principle, and without prejudice to what emerges from the investigation of the procedure, the Prosecutor’s Office considers that he could be the author of a crime of trafficking in protected species of wildlife, document forgery, smuggling and criminal organization.
The Prosecutor’s Office has requested the measure considering that there is a risk of flight and criminal repetition.
The action is an operation of the Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard (Seprona) carried out by agents of the Central Operating Unit for the Environment (UCOMA).
The operation is framed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international legal instrument that regulates the export, re-export and import of live or dead specimens of endangered wild animals and plants, as well as its parts and derivatives.
Its goal is to prevent trade in endangered species and to effectively regulate trade in other wild animal and plant species. EFE
