Caracas, (EFE).- Voluntad Popular (VP), the party of the Venezuelan opposition Leopoldo López, will propose former deputy Juan Guaidó as its candidate for the primaries that anti-Chavismo will hold on October 22, facing the 2024 presidential elections, The political formation reported this Tuesday.
“At the time, we will present our candidate in a great act (…) our proposal, which you already know, is Juan Guaidó, but we will do it, of course, (later) in a campaign atmosphere, festive, joyful, in order to win those primaries on October 22,” former deputy Freddy Superlano, a member of the VP board of directors, said at a press conference.
He explained that the party, whose symbols are in legal dispute, chose Guaidó “by acclamation” in August of last year, but they preferred to wait for the National Primary Commission (CNP) to advance in the organization of the election to announce who they will support. .
Asked about the political disqualification that prevents Guaidó from holding elected positions, which also has numerous judicial investigations open, Superlano said that the negotiating table between the Government and the opposition should agree to lift these restrictions on various leaders.
Although he did not want to make the candidacy official, pending a statement from Guaidó -who was not at this press conference-, the party published on social networks that the election of the former deputy is something “official”.
In January 2019, as head of Parliament, Guaidó proclaimed himself president in charge of Venezuela and headed a so-called “interim government” that controlled assets abroad and promoted an international financial siege against the Executive of Nicolás Maduro.
The so-called “interim government” was dissolved last January by decision of the majority of opponents who had supported Guaidó in 2019.
