Madrid (EFE).- The academic and author Arturo Pérez-Reverte has stated, through social networks, that the RAEinforma Twitter account is offering “biased and inaccurate information” about the agreement to use the accent in the adverb “only” and predicts that next Thursday’s plenary session will be “stormy”.
The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) assured on Friday that the use of the accent in the adverb “only” must be justified in cases where there is a risk of ambiguity in the opinion of the writer, a possibility that was decided in plenary session on Thursday of this week, something that academic writers have claimed for years, according to sources from the plenary session of the Academy.
At the end of the plenary session, Pérez Reverte expressed his satisfaction with this novelty to EFE and pointed out that all the academics agreed to introduce this formulation, since it does not destroy the initial formulation, but allows a more reasonable use of the tilde in these cases, being the author of the text the one who decides whether or not to use it.
The controversy seemed to have ceased, when the writer has reacted to several responses from the RAEinforma in which it is stressed that the plenary session of March 2 does not modify the doctrine of the “Spelling” of 2020, it is even expressed more clearly: 1 The obligation not to mark the adverb “only” and the demonstrative pronouns when there is no risk of ambiguity is maintained.
The answer goes on to point out that “(…) by introducing, in the opinion of the writer, nothing new is added. It is always the one who writes who values ambiguity (…)”.
Pérez Reverte on the tilde in “solo”: “They are giving biased and inaccurate information”
Pérez Reverte’s response has been forceful: “Is nothing new added? Will he have to justify it? I regret to say that @RAEinforma, led by an anti-tildista academic, is giving biased and inaccurate information (…) The RAE plenary session approved an important modification. Next Thursday’s plenary session will be stormy.”
To avoid misinterpretations, Reverte indicates that the academic he is referring to is the director of the RAE’s Spanish department, “who is the one who, with his team, controls the consultation service at @RAEinforma.”
The author of “Red Queen”, Juan Gómez Jurado, answers on the same social network: “This calls for ‘Revolution'”, while fellow writer César Pérez Gellida points out: “I see a precious beginning of linguistic conflict between anti-tildistas and orthodox tildists. Everything is for the tilhostias ”.
