Ankara, (EFE) the tens of thousands of buildings destroyed.
Some 13,000 people are still hospitalized, as explained by the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a new update of the disaster figures after a meeting of the Executive.
Survivors are still being found among the rubble today, such as a father and daughter found alive in the city of Hatay, after being trapped for 209 hours.
Two women were also rescued today after spending 204 and 205 hours, respectively, trapped in the remains of collapsed buildings in Kahramanmaras, where the first quake struck, and in Hatay.
Already this morning, two young people have been rescued after 198 hours trapped under the rubble in Kahramanmaras.
The deceased could reach 155,000
Risklayer, a German risk analysis company, has warned that the final death toll could be between 75,000 and 90,000, although some Turkish experts put the figure at 155,000.
Erdogan pointed out that 47,000 buildings have been destroyed, due to the two earthquakes, of a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6, which last Monday the 6th shook ten provinces of Turkey, with an extension of about 100,000 square kilometers.
Approximately 15% of the thirteen million inhabitants of the most affected area have moved by their own means to other regions, declared the head of state, and that 1.3 million have been rehoused in public buildings and hotels, as well as in prefab houses donated by Qatar.
He also announced that banks and some large companies will donate part of their profits for the year 2022 to alleviate the effects of the catastrophe. For now, he said that the banking sector has contributed some 2.4 billion euros.
The Turkish government already announced last week that 5,000 million euros (5,300 million dollars) will be allocated in emergency aid for those regions.
Erdogan called for solidarity and unity in the country, which is holding decisive elections on May 14 in a highly polarized environment between critics and supporters of the president, who has been in power for twenty years.
Erdogan assured that 98% of the buildings that have collapsed were built before 1999, although the College of Architects has indicated that it was the president himself who ordered the regularization of tens of thousands of buildings erected without a license as part of his strategy to the 2018 elections.
“We can start the construction of 30,000 homes at the beginning of March,” Erdogan said today.
