International Writing (EFE).- The British Conservatives managed to retain the seat that belonged to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the partial elections that were held in three English constituencies.
According to preliminary results published by The Times, the party of incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak managed to retain the seat previously held by Johnson, but suffered a severe blow after the Liberals decimated their 19,000-vote majority in the Somerton and Frome constituencies in south-west England.
The BBC reports that the Tories prevailed by a very narrow margin of 495 votes after a recount to the Liberals in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency in suburban London.
According to the BBC, the seat corresponding to the Selby and Ainsty constituency in North Yorkshire (north), where the Conservatives have a majority of about 20,000 votes, is still in dispute.
Conservatives aim for Uxbridge and Selby
The ruling Conservative Party was hoping to test its level of support in an election held on Thursday in three constituencies in England, where it has so far held a large majority.
The voters of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, in London; Selby and Ainsty, in the county of North Yorkshire; and Somerton and Frome, in Somerset, could choose their new deputy between 06:00 and 21:00 GMT, while the results will be known first thing on Friday.
If Sunak’s “Tories” lost all three seats at the same time – which have been left vacant for different reasons – it would be the first time a head of government has been in this situation since 1968.
Keir Starmer’s Labor are bidding to win Uxbridge and Selby, although this is not guaranteed given the majority of 7,210 and 20,137 votes respectively held by the former Conservative Party MPs.
