Santa Cruz de Tenerife (EFE).- The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, presented this Monday the lines of action on development cooperation, to which 829,776 euros are allocated this year, an amount that he has recognized can be consider small but that maintains an upward trend.
In a press conference together with the CEO of Foreign Action, Liskel Álvarez, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife has indicated that foreign action has always been a hallmark of the island corporation, so that of the 159,000 euros that were allocated in 2019 this year they have reached 829,776 euros.
Pedro Martín has considered that in a globalized world in economic matters it is necessary to globalize cooperation, and has commented that if the amount this year is still small, he thinks that the tendency to increase is not just a one-off occurrence but a way of understanding the action Exterior.
Pedro Martín has asserted that the economic amounts are more relevant at origin than at destination, and has opined that those who govern after the next elections “will not be so obtuse” as to change the trend of increasing aid.
He has commented that it is an economic item from a larger budget, which includes fair trade actions, and of this year’s subsidies he has highlighted three lines, such as an item of 120,000 for Ukraine, 55,000 euros for the Sahara Occidental and 153,000 euros for Venezuela.
In the case of Venezuela, he recalled that elections are close, a time “always suspicious” for international cooperation, “and sometimes more with that country”, so that the help in this case has focused on a foundation that has all the guarantees that the money will reach its destination and will be used without political intermediation.
The CEO of Foreign Action, Liskel Álvarez, has stressed that it is a budget increase five times higher than that of 2019, and has explained that the subsidies have been made through competitive competition and with the idea that the project helps create employment both on the island and at the destination.
Liskel Álvarez has indicated that as a result of these subsidies, 60,000 euros are earmarked for an adult literacy project that Radio Ecca will carry out in Guinea Bissau, and 59,967 euros for educational activities among youth that the Bosco Global Foundation will carry out in Cameroon.
In addition, a nutrition project from the Solidarios Canarios de Atención Social y Cooperación organization will receive 60,000 euros to carry it out in The Gambia, while the Fundación Canaria Control de Enfermedades Tropicales will have 60,000 euros for a project to train research personnel in Guinea Conakry.
The Ser Humano Association will receive 30,960 euros for sanitary material in The Gambia; Fundación Modelo will have 59,300 euros for urban mobility and circular economy projects in Uruguay and Cape Verde, and the NGO Cooperación Internacional will have 60,000 euros for training and professional integration of young people.
The Spain Medical Solidarity Association will receive 9,771 euros for health projects in indigenous communities in the Bolivian Amazon jungle, and the CEO has pointed out that there are other actions for this year, such as an international university master’s degree in energy decarbonization and renovation of the molecular biology laboratory at the University of Cape Verde.
