Logroño, Jan 25 (EFE).- The plenary session of the regional Parliament unanimously approved this Wednesday of all the groups the project of the Universal Accessibility Law of La Rioja, which advances rights for all people who may have mobility problems or cognitive difficulties.
The plenary session was attended by representatives of organizations and entities that work in the field of disability, who, at the end of the vote, with the entire chamber standing, applauded the approval of this Law.
This norm repeals the Law for the suppression of architectural barriers and promotion of accessibility of 1994, for which reason, almost 30 years later, it was necessary to adapt it to “a broader concept of accessibility, which includes the cognitive and intellectual sphere”, he has defended the Minister of Social Services and Public Governance of the Government of La Rioja, Pablo Rubio.
“In this country it seems that when a Law is approved it is a fundamental milestone,” Rubio highlighted, “but the basic thing is the subsequent development and the roadmap, which requires action by the public powers, companies and individuals so that materialize.”
It has verified that «the concept of accessibility has changed and has gone from being a problem of physical access, such as the stairs that limited people in wheelchairs, to a broader concept, which affects the cognitive and intellectual aspects, such as understanding court rulings.”
For this reason, this counselor has stressed that the beneficiaries of this law are not only people with disabilities and are all citizens, since, due to circumstances throughout their lives, they are going to have some accessibility problem. EFE
