Arrecife (Lanzarote) (EFE).- The candidate of Drago Verdes Canarias for president of the autonomous community, Alberto Rodríguez, has defended this Monday in Lanzarote that “the tourism industry has to decrease” and that the islands must be planted ” really diversify” its productive model.
“Ángel Víctor Torres has called us populists, Drago Canarias and all those people who share with us that we must rethink our main economic engine, fixing other fundamental issues for the islands”, Rodríguez pointed out, in the presentation of the coalition’s candidacies the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the municipalities of Arrecife and Teguise.
The leader of Drago has stressed that the Canary Islands have problems such as house prices “through the roof”, deficiencies in health and a “suicide rate above the European average for socioeconomic reasons”, despite the record figures of the tourism sector.
Along the same lines, the head of the list of the coalition to the regional Parliament for Lanzarote, Rafael Jiménez, has criticized that “the increasing arrival of tourists does not imply in any way an improvement in the quality of life” for residents on the island and that a “mass tourism” is taking place that can no longer be “beared”.
For her part, Ester Gómez, candidate for the Cabildo de Lanzarote, has defended that Drago Verdes Canarias represents “the bravest and greenest option, the option that will make the people of Lanzarote once again feel proud of the politicians of their island”.
“We want to show that another way of doing politics is possible, despite the fight in which we will surely find ourselves immersed,” said Gómez, who also mentioned issues such as water, housing or health, where “there is a lot to do”.
Gustavo Santana, candidate for the Arrecife City Council, has focused on the abandonment of the neighborhoods: “I live in Argana Alta and we cannot allow the situation in which the neighborhoods of the capital find themselves. I present myself with the aim of making Arrecife flourish again”.
Finally, the candidate for the Teguise City Council, Elsa Betancort, has assured that the new formation comes to “break with the old way of doing politics and focus on the citizens. One only has to enter the municipality to see the amount of things that still remain to be done”.
All of Drago’s candidates in Lanzarote have also underlined the importance of the “green block” coming together again after such a long time to run for the next elections on May 28. EFE
