Málaga, (EFE).- Macaco discovered his most intimate side in the pandemic, which he captured on the album “Vuélame el corazón”, with which he is touring Spain and America and which he wants to continue with the release of a mini album (EP) at the end of this year with new songs about love relationships.
This next album will “surely” be called “El otro lado del corazón” and it will contain five songs that Daniel Carbonell, the artist behind Macaco, has composed and “saved” in recent months, as well as an “extra” song that is much more rhythmic, “high up”, “with a very Afro beat”, which he wants to release before the summer of 2024, as he explained in an interview with EFE.
change record
“Vuélame al corazón” has allowed Macaco to change register and show on this album his calmer, more personal side, the one that sings about love, in lower tones, with a more whispered voice, with other textures, giving importance to the lyrics.
“I really believe that there are like two ‘monkeys’, to put it in some way: the ‘monkey’ that is more of a festival, that people know more about, very vital, and the other that it took me many years to get to and dare to sing as a little boy”, points out the Barcelona singer-songwriter.
With “Vuélame el corazón” he has had the opportunity to tour festivals and also theaters, a format with which he has greatly enjoyed and in which he has experienced “amazing things” that he does not want to lose.
“It’s something that I really liked and that I’m going to continue pampering,” says the artist, who points out that “El otro lado del corazón” will be like the “B-side” of the previous album, but, unlike the first, there will be no collaborations: “This is going to be totally me and my voice from top to bottom.”
Macaco will perform this summer in some thirty Spanish cities, such as Málaga (Brisa Festival), Bueu (SonRías Baixas Festival), Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Porta Ferrada) or Granada (Zaidín Rock), before making the leap to Latin America again and preparing the long-awaited tour of concerts in theaters.
Back to social issues
Although Macaco has set aside his most demanding songs on his latest album and will also do so on the new EP, both focused on love relationships, he advances that his intention is to record an album with “very social” songs later on.
“I do what I want. Staying in the same thing does not interest me, ”says Macaco, who owes his grandfather his strong social activism, which he has shown on many occasions in defense of the environment or against inequality and animal abuse.
Macaco, on the other hand, has tried to never interfere in political issues: “I’m not sorry because I have thought for many years that the general political structure in the world is badly built.”
The singer does not believe any politician and believes that 90% of them, “when they come to power, because of how it is structured, they corrupt very quickly”, and “make deals with multinationals that later favor them”.
No affection for politics
“It is very ugly to say what I am going to say, but I feel it that way: most politicians, when they come to power, steal, and it makes me very sad, and as a public person I have not wanted to mess with any political party because I do not feel it. I wish I felt it, if I ever feel it, I will, ”he explains.
Macaco does not hide that he has a “left-wing political tendency” and believes that we are “in a very screwed up moment” with the arrival of the extreme right in the institutions.
“I feel very scared. It is dizzying to think that things for which our grandparents have fought are lost, but it is a reflection of society. If they are there (the ultra-right) it is because there are people who have voted for them,” says Macaco, who expects Spaniards to go to the polls en masse on June 23, despite it being a holiday period.
film project in sight
He says that soon he wants to put the brakes on to enjoy a time that is getting out of hand, but Macaco, who is a “restless ass”, has “a thousand projects” ahead of him, and not all of them are musicals.
The Barcelonan began writing a story during the pandemic that has ended up becoming the script for a film that has already aroused the interest of an important production company.
The project, which Macaco has kept on ‘stand by’ due to the release of the album, is a fictional film that has a boy who plays the piano as the protagonist, a story of “magical reality” with a powerful visual and musical element.
The story, “very scripted” and not at all traditional, takes place “in a small town” and there is an environmental theme that affects the family of the protagonist, who has a gift and is able to play a cardboard piano that he draws himself.
“In September I’m going to resume conversations with different production companies and I think that after the next tour I’ll get on with the movie,” Macaco advances, who intends to co-direct it, making a “duo” with some other director. EFE
