Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- Salvamento Marítimo has rescued this Wednesday 70 men of sub-Saharan origin who were sailing in a canoe heading north between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, in a very unusual position for this type of boat, a spokeswoman for the state society has informed EFE.
The cayuco was located around 4:20 p.m. about 50 kilometers east of the Gran Canaria airport by the Arctic Rock, a Dutch cargo ship that was heading towards the port of Las Palmas after leaving the Ivory Coast a week ago.
The occupants of the boat have been rescued by the Salvamar Nunki, which plans to disembark them around 9:00 p.m. (on the islands) at the marina in the capital of Gran Canaria.
This is the third cayuco that has arrived this week in the Canary Islands: the previous two were located in El Hierro on Monday and Tuesday, with 123 and 82 people, respectively. EFE
