The first grapes harvested, as a consequence of the high temperatures that have been recorded in the Campiña Sur de Córdoba in recent weeks, are the early white varieties, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo and Moscatel, which will produce the first musts with which young wines will be made.
These will be followed by the red varieties and, finally, the autochthonous Pedro Ximénez, which have not yet begun to be harvested and which is the bulk of activity in the grape harvest campaign in the area.
full uncertainty
The president of the Asaja Córdoba Vineyard Sector, Juan Manuel Centella, has assured that it is “a worrisome vintage” because it is unknown how the drought and the weather will really affect production.
In fact, he has affirmed that there is “total uncertainty” due to the heat that it can do in the near future.
Centella has specified that the quality of the grapes is very good due to the lack of rain and that this has also caused there to be no disease in the plantations. Although the production will be lower than last year, although it will ultimately depend on the evolution of temperatures recorded in the next forty days.
Last season, production was 30 million kilos of grapes, 10 percent less than in the previous one, which rose to 33 million, as what was the lowest grape harvest in history, with a decrease 45 percent more than what was registered in a year considered normal due to drought and high temperatures. EFE
