Murcia, Jul 16 (EFE).- More than 500 residents had a great time watching Carlos Alcaraz win the final of the Wimbledon tennis tournament against Serbian Novak Djokovic through two large screens that were placed in his town, the Murcian district of El Palmar.
The initiative of the Murcia City Council managed to bring together more than half a thousand people before three in the afternoon, the time set for the start of a meeting that lasted more than four and a half hours; and that the young tennis player from El Palmar, 20 years old and number 1 in the world, won – coming from behind – 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6 and 6-4.
The Consistory chose the Espacio Joven de El Palmar for this event, and to that closed and air-conditioned place, people gradually arrived as a meeting took place that, as one intuited, was long and highly contested, with alternatives and final jubilation.
The screen located inside these municipal offices was joined by another one outside, which is why the initially announced capacity of 400 spectators was exceeded.
Among the attendees were the local mayoress, Verónica Sánchez; the City Councilor for Sports, Miguel Ángel Noguera; and the spokesman for the municipal Vox group in the Consistory, Luis Gestoso.
Neighbors, relatives and friends of Alcaraz, among whom bottles of water were distributed to withstand the suffocation, suffered at first, were encouraged later by Carlitos’ reaction and, after enduring the nerves of Djokovic’s push, ended up exploding with joy for the new success achieved by the undoubtedly most popular inhabitant of the town, the municipality, the Region and one of the most recognized in the country.
Precisely the flags of Spain and Murcia were seen waving in the Youth Space and one of them from the Region had the message ‘Todos con Carlitos, Viva El Palmar y Viva Murcia’ printed on it.
The harangues and shouts of support from a distance – the ‘let’s go!’ was the most often heard- did not stop until the end of the match and even at the trophy delivery ceremony with special prominence for the champion from Palma, of which his neighbors proudly boasted to applause.
