Dos Hermanas (Seville), Jul 16 (EFE).- The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has shamed the central government this Sunday for “not taking seriously” the renewal of the fishing agreement with Morocco. That ends tonight, and “has left an important part of the Andalusian fishing fleet stranded.”
In statements to the media in Dos Hermanas (Seville), Moreno has stressed that the Andalusian government is “concerned and very angry” with the attitude that the central government has had in this matter.
months of requests
“We have been asking the Government of Spain for months to apply all the power it has to negotiate this new agreement or to extend it. And until now there has been a relinquishment of functions by the Sánchez government. That it has not lived up to the intensity of these negotiations, ”he lamented.
In his opinion, the alternative to this negotiation has been aid that, moreover, “does not adapt to the needs of the Andalusian fishing fleet.” With which, starting tonight, dozens of fishing families “are left completely stranded due to a lack of sensitivity, of initiative. And of political weight of the Government of Spain in Brussels”.
According to Moreno, this is one more chapter of the “permanent mistreatment of Andalusia by the Government of Sánchez. In addition to lack of sensitivity towards this land ”. And, in his opinion, “there is only one explanation.” And it is that “he is angry because on June 19, 2022 the Andalusians gave us their majority support. On May 28 in the municipal elections too and, for this reason, he does not even come to Andalusia to campaign. And he punishes us with decisions of that type ”.
“I find it unfortunate and enormously irresponsible that they are playing with the rights and with the lives of dozens of families whose only economic support is the sea. And in fishing in the Moroccan fishing grounds ”, he has censored.
The fishing agreement between the European Union (EU) and Morocco ends this Monday, July 17. With many doubts about its renewal and about the future of the fishing ground for the affected boats, mainly from Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Galicia.
The fishermen denounce
The fishing sector of Barbate and Conil, together with their fishing organizations, have called a concentration this Monday, July 17. At 12:00 p.m. on the esplanade of the fish market of Barbate in the face of “the abandonment and neglect” of the administrations.
Under the motto “The sea belongs to everyone” they plan to demonstrate “in the face of the neglect” of the different political representatives and the “chaotic situation” through which they consider the sector is going, according to a statement.
The fishing representatives of Barbate and Conil thus express their discomfort at the “abandonment and neglect” of the administrations and, on the occasion of a new electoral campaign, they want to know if “they are really going to provide a solution” to the problems of the sector.
They complain that they have been suffering since 2015 from the presence of invasive algae that “are diminishing fishing opportunities”, as well as damaging important economic sources such as tourism.
In the statement, the Andalusian fishermen lament “as a finishing touch” the end of the fishing agreement with Morocco, which they denounce that the ruling political representatives “have failed to defend.” EFE
