During the month of May, 468 million users used public means of transport, which rose 13% from April.
urban transport
More than 284 million passengers opted for public transport in May, 19.9% more than a year earlier; the use of the metro increased by 19%, with the Málaga underground as the one that grew the most, 106.9%.
The one in Seville is the only one that fell, 4%.
Among the cities that have a metro, the largest increase in bus transport was registered in Palma (44%), and the smallest, in Seville (7%).
With regard to the bus, it grew by 20.6% in May, with all the autonomous communities rising; the greatest increases occurred in the Canary Islands (42.8%); Castilla y León (28.5%) and Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha (28.4% in both).
Catalonia (11.9%) and Comunidad de Madrid, Andalucía and Aragón (18.5% all three) registered the smallest increases in bus transport.
In its note, the INE warns that in order to maintain statistical secrecy, the data for the autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, the Foral Community of Navarra and La Rioja, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, are not published separately.
intercity transportation
In May, more than 130.4 million passengers used intercity transport in May, representing an increase of 16.6% compared to the same month in 2022.
By type of transport, railways grew by 17.9%; by bus, 15.8%; air, 13.5%, and maritime, 8.9%.
Cercanías increased 12.5% in bus transport and 15.4% in rail transport, while medium distance grew 24.3% in bus transport and 51.7% in rail .
As for long distance, there was an increase of 24.6% in bus transport and 24% in rail, and within the latter, Alta Velocidad grew by 34.5%.
Special and discretionary transportation
More than 53.2 million users used special and discretionary transport in May, an increase of 1.9% in the annual rate.
The number of special transport passengers fell by 4.2% and exceeded 33 million users; within this, school fell 3.1% and work, 8.3%.
Discretionary transport grew by 13.6% compared to the same month in 2022, with more than 20.1 million passengers.
