Vilnius (EFE).- The president of the United States, Joe Biden, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodímir Zelenski, will meet on Wednesday in Vilnius on the sidelines of the NATO leaders’ summit.
This was explained at a press conference by Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, who announced that there will be announcements tomorrow on how the US can continue supporting Ukraine.
Zelensky’s participation in the NATO summit
According to the summit schedule, Zelensky plans to participate tonight in a dinner at the Presidential Palace with the 31 NATO members, which will also be attended by the leaders of Sweden, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, in addition to the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council.
In addition to meeting with Biden tomorrow, Zelensky will also have a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, after which they will offer a press conference.
Next, he will participate in the first edition of the NATO-Ukraine Council, a new forum for consultation and decision-making on crises that will allow the Ukrainian government to sit alongside allies on an equal footing.
At this summit, the allies will give their support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s war of aggression and will make decisions with which they hope to bring Kiev closer to NATO without even considering its accession.
Specifically, NATO plans to agree on a multi-year aid program to help the Ukrainian armed forces leave the Soviet era behind and transition to the modern equipment, doctrines and standards of the Atlantic Alliance.
In addition, the allies are discussing the possibility of removing the requirement that Kiev follow a membership action plan (MAP), so that Ukraine would simplify its path to join the Alliance.
