London (EFE).- The president of the United States, Joe Biden, said this Monday that his country’s relationship with the United Kingdom is “solid as a rock”, after arriving at the Downing Street residence to meet with the prime minister British, Rishi Sunak.
Amid tight security, Biden was received by Sunak outside the door of 10 Downing Street, where both leaders greeted the media before entering the official residence, where they sat in the gardens to have tea.
After Biden highlighted the strength of the bilateral relationship, Sunak told the media that the two would discuss ways to “strengthen” cooperation between the two countries, as well as economic security “for the benefit of our citizens.”
In addition, Sunak described as “very good” that the two leaders can talk today, after a series of meetings they have held this year, including the prime minister’s visit to Washington last month.
Commenting on the NATO summit in Lithuania starting tomorrow, Sunak noted that the UK and the US are “two of the strongest allies in that alliance and I know we will want to do everything we can to strengthen Euro-Atlantic security.”
This is the first visit by the US head of state to the United Kingdom since the one he made last April to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Northern Ireland peace agreement.
Biden will have tea with Carlos III after meeting with Sunak
Biden, who was not at the coronation of Charles III last May, will meet the British king this afternoon at Windsor Castle, on the outskirts of London.
The president and Sunak are expected to address the situation in Ukraine and possibly the US decision to supply cluster bombs to that country, despite controversy surrounding the weapon because it releases small bombs that can cause numerous victims over a wide area.
