Arrecife de Lanzarote (EFE).- Yonathan de León, number three on the electoral list of the PP for the Arrecife city council in the May elections, has become the new mayor of the city today, replacing the current president of the Parliament of Canarias, Astrid Perez.
Pérez was elected mayoress of Arrecife in the plenary session of the constitution of the new corporation, on June 17, with the support of the seven councilors of her party and the seven of CC, although already then the possibility that she was known was appointed as president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
Once elected president of the Regional Chamber, Pérez, who is also the island president of the PP of Lanzarote, resigned from her position as mayor of Arrecife and councilor of the Corporation, accidentally occupying the Mayor’s Office Echedey Eugenio, from CC.
The number two on the list of the PP to the Arrecife city council, María Jesús Tovar, also resigned her act as councilor to serve as Minister of Finance of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, in such a way that the mayoralty has finally fallen to the third on the list , Yonathan de León, now mayor of Arrecife.
De León was elected as mayor with the support of the fourteen votes of the PP and CC councillors, while the nine PSOE councilors voted for their head of the list, the same as the two VOX councillors.
Jonathan de León, is a senior technician in Administration and finance, studies that he combined with his work as an adviser in the Arrecife City Council of his predecessor Astrid Pérez.
In his speech after being elected mayor, De León expressed his gratitude to Astrid Pérez for the opportunity she has given him to work by her side over the past four years, which, he said, have allowed him to gain an in-depth understanding of the city’s problems.
He assured that he will continue working to move forward the third capital of the Canary Islands and that he will be a mayor close to the citizens, who will be on the streets for a long time “to build the friendly and beautiful Arrecife that we all dream of.” EFE
