Brussels (EFE).- The European Commission (EC) insisted on Wednesday to Spain for the fourth consecutive year that it must address the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary “as a priority matter” and considered that the delay is “negatively affecting the work of the Supreme Court and of the judicial system as a whole.
The recommendation, which appears in the Spanish chapter of the report on the rule of law in the European Union of 2023, also urges to begin, immediately after the renewal, “a process with a view to adapting the appointment of its member judges, taking into account counts the European standards”.
Brussels urges Spain to separate the mandates of the State Attorney General and the Government
The European Commission (EC) reiterated this Wednesday to Spain that it must strengthen the position of State Attorney General and separate the mandates of this position and that of the Government in line with European standards on the autonomy and independence of prosecutors, and pointed out the lack of progress in this area since I made the same recommendation in 2022.
The recommendation, which appears in the Spanish chapter of the 2023 report on the rule of law in the European Union, warns that “no measures have been taken” to separate both mandates and also recalls the warning of the Group of States against Corruption of the Council of Europe, which in December 2022 indicated that “the budgetary, regulatory and training autonomy” of the Prosecutor’s Office has not been increased.
