Santa Cruz de Tenerife (EFE).- Rosa Dávila Mamely has recovered this Monday the Presidency of the Cabildo de Tenerife for the Canary Islands Coalition (CC), after four years in which the socialist Pedro Martín was in charge of the institution.
Pedro Martín was re-elected president of the Cabildo in the elections of May 28, as he was at the forefront of the most voted list, but he resigned because he did not have the majority support of the plenary session, which this Monday gave the presidency to Rosa Dávila with the support of the ten CC councilors and the eight of the PP, while PSOE (eleven councilors) and Vox (two seats) have abstained.
For the first time, a woman will be in charge of the institution on the island of Tenerife, a position that Rosa Dávila, in her first speech before the plenary session, has promised to exercise with “honour, humility and determination”.
The new island president has pledged to work for a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future and has stressed that the accession of a woman to the presidency of the Cabildo for the first time “is not only a personal achievement, but a symbol of progress and equity” .
Dávila has recognized the contribution of the 31 presidents that the Cabildo has had since 2013, with special mention to the late Adán Martín, whom he defined as “a visionary leader” who left a lasting mark on the progress of Tenerife.
Among the audience were two other former presidents of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso and Ricardo Melchior.
Rosa Dávila also thanked her immediate predecessor, Pedro Martín, and his government for their service to the island during his tenure and their active cooperation in the transfer of powers.
The president said that she assumes office aware that she must serve all people, regardless of their origin or political affiliation, and she will do so from a stable and solid majority that has been possible due to the “generous” contribution of the PP and of its leader in the Cabildo, Lope Afonso.
Dávila said that his purpose is to recover the historical leadership of Tenerife, ensure that all the inhabitants of the island have a dignified life based on equal opportunities and work for the eradication of poverty, sustainable economic growth and diversification.
The new president affirmed that she will face the challenge of traffic jams “with determination and creativity” to build “an efficient and sustainable mobility system.”
The outgoing president of the Cabildo and spokesman for the PSOE, Pedro Martín, wished his successor a good mandate, made himself available to collaborate in the progress of Tenerife and hoped that agreements would be reached for the good of the island.
The socialist opposition will be “serious, responsible and forceful, but not cainita nor resentful”, affirmed Pedro Martín.
José Miguel Ruano, CC spokesman, recognized the work of the previous island presidents and explained that the government group will keep its hand outstretched to reach agreements.
Lope Afonso, from the PP, also had words of thanks to the outgoing government for the facilities for the transfer of responsibilities, affirmed that the hand will remain outstretched to the opposition and hoped that this climate of understanding would contribute to improving the image of politics .
Regarding the government agreement with CC, the PP spokesman said that it is based on mutual trust and loyalty and that it is the best option for the stability of the island.
The Vox spokeswoman, Ana Salazar, expressed her good wishes for the performance of the new island government and stressed that her party will keep its hand out.
