The Hague (EFE) stabbings in the capital carried out particularly by young people.
In a letter to the plenary session of the city council, the mayoress Femke Halsema announced that the norm will be applied throughout the municipality of Amsterdam and will enter into force this same Saturday, “which means that, in addition to the weapons that are already prohibited by law Weapons and Ammunition, it will not be allowed to carry knives for normal use in public spaces.
Prohibited knives including kitchen knives, pocket knives, those that are part of a multi-tool set and folding knives, although those that are packaged in boxes are excluded, in such a way that they cannot be used as stabbing weapons immediately.
Why has the decision been made in Amsterdam to ban knives?
This ban indicates a “clear and uniform standard” for the police and comes after numerous stabbing incidents have been recorded in the Dutch capital, particularly by young people, and “several schools have requested to be able to send a clear signal that all knives are prohibited,” Halsema said.
With this rule, the police will be able to fine those who carry a new or used knife, of any kind, and confiscate it, which, the mayoress points out, “contributes to street safety.”
Beyond Amsterdam, the Ministry of Justice and Security itself is drawing up a law to prohibit the carrying of knives for general use in public spaces at a national level, as well as their sale to minors.
