“Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Chile advance together. Today we provisionally receive the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance to continue promoting good relations and development between our countries, ”revealed the Chilean foreign minister through his social networks.
The decision was adopted at a meeting held in Santiago, in which the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile; the ambassador of Mexico in Chile, Alicia Bárcena; the business manager of Peru in Chile, Renzo Villa Prado; and the Colombian business manager in Chile, René Correa Rodríguez.
“In this significant meeting, the authorities of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru reaffirmed their commitment to the Pacific Alliance as a mechanism for political articulation, economic and commercial integration, cooperation and projection to the world, which seeks to progressively move towards free circulation of goods, services, capital and people, with a view to boosting the growth and competitiveness of the economies, for the benefit of its inhabitants”, states a statement released by the Chilean Foreign Ministry.
The presidency of Peru despite the impasse in the Alliance
Peru will assume the pro tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance on August 1 from Chile, a country that this Wednesday assumed said position provisionally due to Mexico’s resistance to ceding it to Lima for political reasons, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry reported in a statement.
“In statements to the press, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Alberto van Klaveren, has reported on the agreements reached, noting that on August 1, 2023, Peru will assume the pro tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance”, pointed out the Peruvian Foreign Ministry.
“The agreement reached reflects the political will to continue betting on Latin American integration, which favors dialogue, economic-commercial exchange, cooperation and international integration,” added the Peruvian Foreign Ministry.
Peru should have received the presidency of the bloc from Mexico in December, but President Andrés Manuel López Obrador does not recognize the government of Dina Boluarte, whom he calls a “usurper”, and since then, the country has claimed that position in various occasions.
On June 1, the plenary session of the Peruvian Congress declared the Mexican president persona non grata, due to his repeated statements on internal affairs in Peru and his refusal to transfer the Presidency of the Pacific Alliance.
The Mexican ruler considers that he should leave “the Presidency to the one who won in a free and democratic election, to Pedro Castillo”, who has been imprisoned since December 7 after being dismissed by the Peruvian Congress after attempting to carry out a coup d’état.
