Valladolid (EFE).- Deaths by suicide continue in their annual trickle of increase in Castilla y León, 3.36% percent in 2022, after 3.5 in 2021 and 4.58 the previous year, up to 246 , eight more in absolute data and more than double the deaths from traffic accidents in the Community last year, which were 168, with an increase of 47.3 percent and 54 more deaths in absolute data.
Last year, 4,097 people committed suicide in Spain, 2.3 percent more than a year earlier, a proportion that was even higher in those over 20 years of age: 84 took their own lives in 2022, representing an increase of 12 percent compared to 2021.
The provisional data published this Tuesday by the INE in its Deaths by Cause of Death Statistics are still provisional, but confirm the upward trend in suicides in recent years, which have gone from 3,539 in 2018 to 3,671 in 2019; 3,941 in 2020 and 4,003 in 2021 and 4,097 last year.
In Castilla y León, 246 people died from suicide and self-inflicted injuries in 2022, the highest figure since the 240 in 2014, although the maximum in the Community, according to the INE data from the series since 1980 compiled by EFE, was in 1988 with 253.
The sixth community by number of suicides
By autonomies, Castilla y León was the sixth Community with the highest number of suicides, a figure that is consistent with the population, with Andalusia leading the way with 814.
And by gender, of the 246 suicides, 184 were in men and 62 in women in the Community in 2022, according to the same sources.

31,390 people died from all causes in Castilla y León last year, 5.9 percent more than the previous year, with 15,905 men and 15,485 women.
Tumors were behind 7,513 of the deaths (7,394 in 2021), with 1,424 due to endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases, 1,032 of them due to diabetes; another 1,293 for mental and behavioral disorders; 1,557 due to diseases of the nervous system, with 759 due to Alzheimer’s (745 in 2021).
Diseases of the circulatory system caused 8,003 deaths in 2022 in the Community (8,076), with 1,179 due to hypertensive diseases, 929 heart attacks and 1,465 heart failures.
Another 2,776 were due to diseases of the respiratory system; 1,651 from the digestive system and 1,178 from the genitourinary system.
In addition, there were 85 deaths due to senility (77) and two sudden infant deaths (5).
Deaths from traffic accidents grow by 47 percent to 168 in 2022
Among the external causes of death, with 1,417 deaths in total in the Community, in 2022, in addition to suicides, deaths due to traffic accidents stood out, with this increase of more than 47 percent and 168 deaths.
Due to accidental drowning, submersion and suffocation, 346 people died in the Community, compared to 263 the previous year; and 18 people died in Castilla y León due to homicide (14), with two due to complications in medical and surgical care, half that in 2021.
Deaths from covid increase by 4 percent and deaths from flu go from 1 to 76
In 2022, deaths from identified covid increased by 4 percent in the Community, which went from 2,645 to 2,751; while deaths from influenza went from one to 76 in one year.
