Arrecife (Lanzarote) (EFE).- The nationalist Oswaldo Betancort García, from CC, has been invested this Monday as the new president of the Cabido de Lanzarote, after having prevailed in the last local elections on May 28 by 69 votes to his predecessor in the position, Dolores Corujo, of the PSOE.
The new president of the Cabildo will govern the institution with an absolute majority, since although his party achieved eight of the 23 councilors that make up the corporation in the last elections, the regional pact signed between CC and PP allows him to have the support of the four representatives of the PP.
From now on, the eight representatives of the PSOE will remain in the opposition, headed by former president María Dolores Corujo, current regional parliamentarian and head of the list for the province of Las Palmas in the congressional elections.
The two representatives of Nueva Canarias and the sole advisor of Vox will also be in the opposition, a formation that for the first time achieves representation in the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
The new president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, 47 years old and graduated in Law, has been mayor of Teguise for the last twelve years and regional parliamentarian in the last legislature.
In his first speech after being sworn in as president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort has announced that the priority of the new island government will be the development of social policies, giving the importance they deserve to third sector organizations and developing concerts with all of them.
It has also indicated as objectives the creation of a car park at the Doctor Molina Orosa Hospital and the implementation of a housing plan, as well as the development of a new island hospital and a new sports city.
Betancor has assured that it will be vindictive with the new Government of the Canary Islands that will be chaired by the general secretary of his party, Fernando Clavijo, who will demand to provide the island with the necessary investments in infrastructure. EFE
