In a meeting at the Greek presidency headquarters, broadcast live on ERT public television, the country’s head of state, Katerina Sakelaropulu, entrusted Mitsotakis with the formation of the Executive.
“An hour ago I received the final results of the elections. Taking into account that an absolute majority has been achieved, I entrust the formation of a new government,” Sakelaropulu told the conservative politician.
He promised to move forward “immediately” in the appointment of the members of a cabinet “that will work hard” to carry out “the great changes and reforms” that the country needs.
According to Mitsotakis, his government will take office tomorrow, Tuesday, and “will get to work immediately.”
The ND formation triumphed in yesterday’s elections with 40.5% of the votes, and by virtue of a bonus of seats to the most voted party, obtained 158 of the 300 seats in the Greek Parliament and, with it, the absolute majority .
Mitsotakis’s party will thus be able to govern alone again, as it has done for the past four years.
In second place was the opposition and leftist Syriza, of the former head of Government Alexis Tsipras, with a real disaster, since it gathered just 17.8% of the votes and 48 seats.
“The citizens have given us a strong mandate to move faster on the path of great changes,” Mitsotakis said yesterday after his broad victory.
Tsipras acknowledged his defeat and put his position “in the opinion of the militants” of the formation, which could call a meeting of its governing bodies in the coming days to decide on its future.
At 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT) the conservative leader will go back to the headquarters of the presidency to be sworn in as prime minister before Sakelaropulu.
