Zamora, June (EFE) Portugal and France.
The stalls of the traditional meeting, which is part of the fairs and festivals of San Pedro, occupy the Viriato and Claudio Moyano squares, in the heart of the old town of Zamora, and 32 pottery stalls and 35 ceramics participate.
Traditional ceramics and pottery
The artisans come mainly from Castilla y León and also from other communities such as Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, Cantabria, Navarra, the Basque Country, Asturias, Madrid, as well as Portugal and a ceramicist from France.
Ramón García, a potter from the Zamora town of Pereruela, in the Sayago region, explained that the number of positions is decreasing due to the lack of generational replacement, since “there are fewer and fewer people who want to dedicate themselves to the sector.”
He has highlighted that the Zamora fair is one of the most important in the sector and that it is characterized by the fact that “everyone who goes through it buys a piece either for themselves or as a gift”.
Isabel Méndez, from the pottery municipality of Salvatierra de los Barros (Badajoz), explained that they tend to attend whenever they can because it is a “very crowded public event, there is a very good atmosphere and something is always for sale.”
Among the exhibited pieces, clay pots and typical roasting ovens stand out, as well as jugs of water and garden ornaments, while in the part dedicated to ceramics, decorative objects and costume jewelery predominate.

Carlos Pérez, from the Zamora town of Cabañas de Aliste, explains that it is difficult to dedicate themselves professionally to the sector, which is why there is no generational replacement when artisans retire.
“By tradition, people in Zamora know, appreciate ceramics, ask questions and also buy. Many foreign potters are delighted with Zamora”, he stated.
Another of the participating potters is Henar Herrero, from Orzonaga (León), who exhibits her porcelain works: “It is the country’s veteran fair, it is very beautiful, they take great care of us and it is very varied,” he pointed out. EFE
