Washington (EFE).- The president of the United States, Joe Biden, placed the right to abortion at the center of his electoral campaign for 2024 with a speech in defense of reproductive rights and winning the support of three powerful groups defending women .
Biden decided to focus on abortion in a symbolic moment for the United States, as tomorrow marks a year since the Supreme Court struck down federal abortion protections, which has caused several states to ban or restrict that right.
In a speech in a hotel auditorium in Washington, Biden gave his words an electoral tone that most of his speeches lack and alluded to the power of women to decide the course of the country with their vote.
Campaign for 2024
Biden recalled his efforts to make abortion a central issue in the 2020 legislative elections, in which the Democrats reaped a better result than expected, and pointed out that his 2024 campaign will also be full of messages in support of that right. .
Most of the audience were women, who were especially excited to see US Vice President Kamala Harris, who has become the government’s leading advocate for abortion rights, traveling to different states to give speeches and meet with activists, doctors and patients.
we fight for freedom
Harris framed the fight for the right to abortion in a fight for freedom and for the values contained in the United States Constitution.
“There is something very important about the fight we are in. We are fighting for fundamental principles, for some of the most important principles on which our nation was founded. We fight for the freedom to make decisions about our own lives, about our own bodies,” Harris stated.
After their speeches, Biden and Harris mingled with the audience to chat and take photos.
The event had been organized by three groups: Emily’s List, a powerful organization dedicated to promoting pro-abortion women’s political campaigns; Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest network of sexual and reproductive health clinics; and Naral, dedicated to expanding access to abortion.
These elections will be about freedom
All these groups, which have significant resources to mobilize voters, announced this Friday their support for Biden and Harris in the 2024 election campaign.
While it is not surprising that they endorse Biden, it is remarkable how quickly they have made these announcements, which usually occur later in the campaign.
The reason is that, by declaring their support for Biden, these groups can begin to mobilize resources in favor of the president and try to make the issue of abortion play a determining role in the electoral contest.
Biden, by his own admission, also wants abortion to be the focus of the campaign.
In fact, with a cracking voice, at one point in his speech, the president cried out: “Make no mistake, these elections will be about freedom. Freedom is what’s on the ballot!”
