Sports writing, (EFE).- The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), leader of the Formula One World Championship, set this Saturday the best time in the wet last free test for the Canadian Grand Prix, the eighth of the year, which dispute at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, where the Spaniards Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who had an accident -without physical consequences- and only drove for half an hour, set the third and fifth times, respectively, and the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), the seventeenth.
In the best of his 22 laps, Verstappen covered the 4,361 meters of the Montreal track in one minute, 23 seconds and 106 thousandths with an intermediate tire -with which everyone signed their fast laps, in a session marked by rain. , 291 less than the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who gave the same laps as him; and with a second and three tenths less than the Asturian double world champion.
The session, taking into account that this Sunday’s race is expected to be dry, only served to do (complicated) tests with a view to qualifying, on a very slippery track where ‘walks’ and track exits were lavished ; and in which the worst unemployed was Sainz.
The man from Madrid, who was one second and six tenths behind the time of ‘Mad Max’, lost control of the rear of his Ferrari entering the first of the fourteen curves of the beautiful Canadian track – built inside the artificial island de Notre-Dame, which bathes the San Lorenzo river-, crashing into the wall, in an accident that ripped off the front wing and may have ‘touched’ the new gearbox of his car.
Carlos’s accident -who could only complete fourteen laps- caused his session to end right in the middle of it; interrupted for eight minutes, with a red flag, to remove the damage to his car from the track.
Alonso, the great sensation at the start of the World Cup -with five podium finishes in the first seven races at the age of 41, which place him third in the championship, 71 points behind the 170 with which Verstappen commands- repeated the circuit 18 times in the which, in 2006, achieved one of his 32 F1 victories. In a session during which it rained with different intensities and which ended with a heavy downpour; in which the Danish Kevin Magnussen (Haas) marked the fourth time -just five hundredths less than Sainz- and the Canadian Lance Stroll, Alonso’s new teammate, the seventh.
‘Checo’, second in the World Championship, 53 points behind Verstappen, repeated twenty times the layout of the track where he finished third, with a Sauber, in 2012. In his best attempt, the brave driver from Guadalajara was two seconds behind and seven tenths of the time of his Dutch teammate.
