Washington (EFE).- The United States Attorney General, Merrick Garland, defended this Wednesday the appointment last November of Jack Smith to investigate former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), whom the latter, recently charged, described as ” ruffian”.
“When I named Mr. Smith, I did so because it underscores the Justice Department’s commitment to independence and accountability. Mr. Smith is a veteran career prosecutor,” Garland told reporters.
Smith, he stressed, “brought together a group of experienced and talented prosecutors and agents who share his commitment to integrity and the rule of law.”
His appointment took place to investigate Trump’s involvement in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 while Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential elections of the previous November was ratified and the theft of classified White House documents after leaving power.
Trump poses a challenge
For this last case, 37 charges are charged. Trump, who appeared before the Court in Miami on Tuesday, thus became the first US president or former president to face a federal accusation.
This same Tuesday night, Trump promised that, if he wins the 2024 presidential election, he will appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Biden, whom he defined as “the most corrupt president in the history of the United States.”
The former president, who pleaded “not guilty” before the court, also assured in his speech that Smith is dedicated to carrying out “political assassinations” and that the Justice Department’s decision to prosecute him took place for political reasons.
