Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE) The municipality will be the “bulwark” of progressive and left-wing policies in a context of a wave of the right and extreme right.
This was stated by Carolina Darias, Pedro Quevedo (NC) and Gemma Martínez (Unidas Sí Podemos) after signing the government agreement for the city, which, according to Darias, will have eight government areas with their respective mayoral tenures -the first and the second will be for Quevedo and Martínez, while the third will be occupied by Francisco Hernández Spínola and the fourth by Inmaculada Medina.
The eight areas of government, although they have not specified the councilors who will manage them, are the Presidency, the Treasury and Modernization; Economic Development, Mobility and Coastline; Strategic Development, Accessibility and Energy; Urbanism and Housing; Social and Sports Well-being; Education, Culture and Sports; Territorial Coordination, Carnival, Festivals and Water; and Security and Emergencies.
In her speech, Carolina Darias stressed that “the government of progress will seek to improve people’s lives” after the citizens expressed their desire for the municipality to follow that path, despite weeks of “intense negotiations” to reach an agreement “which was the one that was wanted from the beginning because it was the one that the city had manifested.”
“We wanted to live up to what the city required”, insisted the socialist candidate, who has opined that the program to govern has been made based on an “accurate” diagnosis that revolves around making Las Palmas de Gran Canaria “a city at the forefront of progressive policies, which is more prosperous, cohesive and sustainable and where mobility is a national reference backbone”.
For his part, the head of the Nueva Canarias list, Pedro Quevedo, has highlighted that Las Palmas is the only one of the ten most populous cities in Spain in which a “progressive” government is likely to resist.
In his opinion, this is the result of “having succeeded with strategic policies in difficult times.”
“Citizens have validated the progress policies and the project we represent is what the city needs. This is a tremendous boost”, Quevedo insisted.
Thus, the mayor of NC has pointed out that “in the face of the permanent disqualification, the nonsense and the insult that Spanish politics has become” the “measures designed calmly” are opposed.
Likewise, Gemma Martínez has celebrated that the pact reflects what was voted at the polls and that Las Palmas stands up against the context of the rise of the extreme right.
As he explained, the negotiations to formalize the pact have been “intense”, although he has opined that the final document addresses the electoral programs of the three parties.
“A project for a modern and future city, as the citizens deserve”, declared Martínez, who has advanced that he will lead the Environmental Sustainability area to make Las Palmas de Gran Canaria a “friendly, green, accessible and sustainable” city.
Finally, he has also asserted that the government group will be “serious, loyal and responsible.” EFE
