United Nations (EFE) what the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been for the nuclear field.
This possibility was recently raised by several experts in the sector, including the OpenAI company -developer of the popular ChatGPT-, and according to the British press, it is promoted by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, who wants that organization to be established in London.
“It depends on the initiatives of the member states, but I would be in favor of the idea that we can have an artificial intelligence agency, let’s say inspired by what the International Atomic Energy Agency is today,” Guterres said during a press conference.
The IAEA, based in Vienna, started in 1957 to promote and control nuclear energy and is part of the United Nations structure.
The UN wants to be at the center of decisions
Guterres made it clear that such a decision is in the hands of the countries in the organization, but said the UN would like to be “at the center of all the networks and movements” that are established to manage AI.
As he explained, the advantage of an organization like the IAEA is that it has a “very solid knowledge base” and, at the same time, it has certain regulatory functions.
“I think this model could be very interesting,” said Guterres, who stressed in any case the need to work on this process with the companies that are developing the AI and that are the ones that have the real technical experts right now.
For his part, the head of the United Nations advanced his intention to establish in the coming days a group of scientific advisers to work on the next steps in the field of AI, including the preparation of a summit that the Kingdom is organizing for this year. United.
Later, after the annual meetings in September at the United Nations General Assembly, Guterres plans to create an advisory body for everything related to artificial intelligence.
Keep an eye on the advancement of artificial intelligence
The UN secretary-general already proposed last week a grand global pact to manage digital technologies, including the rapid advancement of AI.
“New technology is advancing at enormous speed and so are the threats that come with it,” Guterres recalled today, stressing that it is the artificial intelligence developers themselves who are sounding the alarm.
“These scientists and experts have called for the world to act, declaring AI an existential threat to humanity, at the level of the risk of nuclear war. We must take those warnings seriously,” he insisted.
