Madrid (EFE).- The European Commission (EC) has extended until December 31, 2023 the movement restrictions that apply in Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha after the detection of outbreaks of sheep and goat pox.
In addition, the areas of Cuenca affected by these measures have been expanded.
The Official Journal of the European Union publishes this Monday the decision of the EC that establishes the extension until 2024, since the measures to stop the spread of sheep pox were in force until October 31.
The measures have been extended taking into account the “current epidemiological situation” regarding the disease.
The EC has indicated that, after the imposition of the restrictions on the movement of animals currently in force, Spain notified an additional outbreak of sheep pox in Castilla-La Mancha.
This outbreak arose in the province of Cuenca, outside the region’s surveillance zone.
For this reason, the areas listed as protection and surveillance zones and restricted zones have been updated.
Sheep pox, a disease that is not transmitted to humans
Sheep and goat pox is a non-zoonotic disease that exclusively affects sheep and goats.
In no case can it be transmitted to humans, neither by direct contact with animals, nor through the handling and/or consumption of products derived from them.
