Logroño, (EFE) food thanks to which the city resisted the siege of the French army in 1521.
The Fish Brotherhood, the entity in charge of safeguarding this tradition, has been in charge since early morning of preparing the food that is distributed next to the Revellín wall, where long lines of citizens have formed who waited patiently under their umbrellas. .
Among the brothers who are in charge of distributing the rations was the general secretary of the PP, Cuca Gamarra from Logroño, who was mayoress of the Rioja capital between 2011 and 2019 and never lacks this tradition.
502 years ago, the people of Logroño tenaciously resisted the siege of the French army thanks to the fish poached in the Ebro River, the wine stored in the city’s underground cellars and the humblest of all foods: bread, made from wheat from local barns.
On June 11, 1521, the day of San Bernabé, the siege was finally broken and Logroño made the saint its patron, in gratitude and commemoration of that date, the senior brother of this organization, Fernando Azofra, has reminded EFE, who precisely celebrates his birthday this Sunday.
Throughout the morning, some 925 kilos of trout weighing about 35 grams each, a thousand liters of red wine donated by the Vivanco family and some 1,600 loaves of sliced bread are distributed.
It is not the first time that the rain tries to tarnish the main act of this brotherhood, which has some tents to prevent the water from coming into contact with the olive oil, also from La Rioja, in which the fish are fried.
People from Logroño who wish can purchase the typical clay jug with today’s date, with which they can then drink free wine in some bars on Calle Laurel, thanks to an initiative of the hoteliers’ association of this gastronomic area.
