“Things come when they have to come, in the past I have received many proposals but I didn’t dare then, I didn’t feel like it, it made me small just thinking about going to shoot them,” he explained to EFE this Friday in Madrid, after the preview that took place last night at the Kinépolis cinemas.
“But suddenly the pandemic arrives -he adds-, very strong things happen to me and I say, what is this fear? You just have to be afraid of losing your health, nothing else in this life.”
Winner of two Goyas and nominated eleven times, the doors of Hollywood opened for Verdú thanks to the success of “Y tu mamá también” (2001) by Alfonso Cuarón, but she rejected several offers, such as “Daredevil” (2003) with Ben Affleck, among those who have transcended.
Outside the heart of that industry, he has worked with directors such as Guillermo del Toro, in the Spanish-Mexican “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006) or Coppola in “Tetro” (2009), works that Muschietti, director of films from horror like “Mom” (2013) or “It” (2017).
“She’s an actress that I’ve admired all my life and I knew she was going to exude that warmth, that familiarity and that love, I couldn’t think of anyone else, she’s a character that doesn’t show up too much but is the emotional center of everything, without that emotion the film would not work”, affirms the filmmaker.
Verdú plays Flash’s mother
Verdú plays Flash’s mother (Ezra Miller) in a plot in which the protagonist intends to travel back in time to save his family from certain tragic events that have marked him.
Professionally, the actress assures that she would not change anything from her past even if she had that superpower. “Sometimes I have thought about it, because there are some films that you deny, but in those films I met people who are very important to me and I always prioritize the human aspect before anything else.”
“All the things that I have experienced, that I have lived or that have happened to me have made me the person that I am,” he stressed.
“Flash” is the first film to be released about this DC Comics character, after all kinds of vicissitudes that have delayed the project, including the pandemic and the problems with justice of its protagonist, recently convicted of a house robbery. and that he has admitted to having mental health problems.
Verdú only has words of affection for his co-star. “He is one of the best actors I have ever met in my life, his generosity, his punctuality, his sense of humor, how affectionate and sweet he is, Ezra and I became mother and son from the first day of shooting”, has pointed out.
“He wanted to know what I liked the most and on the last day of shooting he organized a Mexican party for me in a tent, Ezra is my friend,” he added.
Since filming with Cuarón, Verdú has maintained a close relationship with Mexico and in the last year he has shot several projects there pending release, including a film for Netflix called “Family”, together with director Rodrigo García and actor Daniel Giménez Cacho ( the protagonist of “Bardo” by Iñárritu).
In August he plans to shoot the eighth part of the Spanish series “Elite”.
