Rome (EFE).- Pope Francis spent the night well after the operation he underwent this Wednesday at the Gemelli hospital in Rome for an abdominal hernia, which he overcame without complications and for which he will have to be hospitalized for several days.
The Vatican reported today that “the night has gone well” and that a new medical report will be communicated during the day.
The Italian media have also assured that, from the hospital, it was leaked that the night had been “quiet” for the pontiff.
Yesterday, after the intervention, the doctor who operated on him, Sergio Alfieri, already confirmed that the operation had gone well, that Francisco was awake and had even made several jokes.
Alfieri, who had already operated on his colon in July 2021, explained that any other type of pathology is ruled out and did not want to specify how many days he will have to remain hospitalized since everything will depend on how it evolves, taking into account that the pontiff is 86 years old. .
Dr. Alfieri has detailed that during the surgical intervention “strong adhesions were found between some partially encompassed medial-tenual intestinal loops and the parietal peritoneum, which was what caused the symptoms” and “therefore, the adhesions were released ” and the reconstruction of the abdominal wall with a mesh.
Generally, the surgeon explained, after an operation of these characteristics, seven days of hospitalization are needed, but it must be taken into account “that the Pope is 86 years old, that he has already undergone four surgeries, that he was recently hospitalized for a lung infection, and therefore, clearly we will take all precautions.
For the moment, the Vatican has canceled all the audiences and acts of the pope until June 18 and the two trips he will make to Lisbon at the beginning of August to participate in World Youth Day and to Mongolia at the end of the same month are maintained. .
