Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The Juvenile Judge of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and founder of the Up2U project, Reyes Martel, has presented this Thursday a boxing workshop together with the Olympic boxer Samuel Carmona to promote integration among young people at risk of social exclusion.
The ‘BOX Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’ will take place at the facilities of the sports center in the Las Rehoyas neighborhood, with the collaboration of the Solventia Group, which provides that space, the Municipal Sports Institute of the city and under the coordination of Samuel Carmona , Olympian at the Rio 2016 Games and, currently, a professional who aspires to the world flyweight title.
The Juvenile judge has indicated that contact sports, such as boxing, “boys and girls like a lot and, in addition, they require a lot of discipline, compliance with certain rules, but it also serves to discharge negative energy , channel anger or frustration and control impulses.
Reyes Martel has added that the workshop has young people “who have experienced very complicated circumstances, such as foreign minors who have arrived in a boat and are alone”, but the sport tool for integration is “a magic formula”, and more if it counts with the participation “of a reference like Samuel Carmona, who knows what it is to have a bad time, to be in a situation of conflict and arrive as a minor before a court, but to overcome all that, so he can explain all that to them in their language struggle”.
The boxer from Gran Canaria is “fully involved” in this workshop and making “a tremendous effort”, Reyes Martel stressed, since he travels to Gran Canaria every week from the High Performance Center in Madrid.
For his part, Samuel Carmona has highlighted in the launch of the workshop that he is “delighted” to be able to transmit all his “knowledge” to young people during classes, in which, in addition to learning, they enjoy the moment.
“Boxing has made me change everything, because apart from being an athlete you have to be a good person and, if I have arrived, they can do it too. I am very grateful and happy to be able to help them”, added the boxer from the island.
The Up2U-Depends on You project carries out sports activities throughout the year such as the one presented this Thursday, to promote the integration and personal development of young people in a situation of social vulnerability, or subject to judicial measures. EFE
