Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (EFE).- The Catalan coach Xavier García Pimienta has renewed his contract with Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for one season, so he will continue to lead the team in the return of the Gran Canaria club to the First Division, a category in which he debuted as a technician.
In a statement, UD Las Palmas announces that the agreement for García Pimienta to continue in the team was closed this afternoon, in a meeting between the coach and the president, Miguel Ángel Ramírez.
The coaching staff of the first team is completed by Álex García, assistant coach; David Gómez, physical trainer; and José Esteban Yepes, goalkeeping coach.
Francisco Javier García Pimienta joined the yellow discipline in January 2022 and his first match on the bench in charge of UD Las Palmas faced Real Sociedad B, on January 30 of that year.
After adding eleven victories and five draws, he managed to qualify the team for the ‘play-off’ for promotion to First Division, in which the yellow team was eliminated in the semifinals by CD Tenerife.
Already in the project for the 2022-23 season, García Pimienta fulfilled the objective of climbing to the highest category, something he achieved by obtaining direct promotion after adding 18 wins and 18 draws and giving up only six losses throughout the course.
The Catalan coach also made UD Las Palmas the best visiting team in LaLiga SmartBank.
Throughout the 42 days he placed the first team in direct promotion on 32 occasions (of which 16 he remained as leader) and in another nine days, in play-off positions.
Before the end of the season, Ramírez had already publicly offered García Pimienta the renewal and the coach had expressed his desire to continue leading the team.
However, according to sources from the club, the negotiations were complicated this week due to economic differences between what the coach’s representative demanded and what the entity was willing to face. EFE
