Madrid (EFE).- The designer Teresa Helbig (Barcelona, 1963) has been awarded this Tuesday with the 2023 National Fashion Design Award granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, endowed with 30,000 euros.
Oblivious to the fashions that come and go, Teresa Helbig, synonymous with good taste, craftsmanship and elegance in essence, has received this award for “a long career characterized by its innovative drive and the artistic quality of its work from its origins in the family business”.
In the same way, the jury has highlighted “his work for the sake of training new professionals. The international relevance achieved by her work, her continuous dialogue with other arts and cultural industries, as well as, especially, her research, updating and incorporation of crafts into the most avant-garde lines of Spanish design, make her a recipient of this Award. ”.
The National Fashion Design Award rewards the meritorious work of the winner through a work that, in this creative field, has been made public during 2022 or, in duly motivated cases, a complete professional career over time.
“A ‘Helbig woman’ never goes unnoticed”
“A ‘Helbig woman’ never goes unnoticed”, this phrase is the motto of this meticulous designer.
She debuted as a designer for herself, with a curdled piece of more than 800 feathers, sewn one by one. A world that she discovered from a very young age, because her mother, also a seamstress and right hand in the firm, transmitted her love for fabrics and care for stitches.
That flirtatious and colorful dress has led her to have her own firm, to create pieces that fall in love at first sight, garments full of details that are consolidated in exquisiteness and beauty.
In her creations, no dress is the same as the other, but they all contain chords of haute couture, to the rhythm of rock and roll and with a touch of rogue.
Handmade and quality
In the exquisite sewing of the Catalan designer, the craftsmanship and quality stand out, a fact that has to do with her commitment to the environment and sustainability, her commitment to long-term pieces.
Stars like Halle Berry or Zendaya have already dressed the creations of the award-winning designer who, with a small company, makes a product that gives great value to “savoir faire”, creating unique and special pieces.
Teresa Helbig, who is also among the favorites of young women who want to wear white to say “I do”, likes to call her designs “jewel-dresses”, precious pieces wrapped in a nocturnal or party halo.
After Pedro Rodríguez, Pertegaz, Elio Berhanyer, Alfredo Caral and Adolfo Dominguez, this Catalan has been in charge of designing the latest Iberia uniforms worn by more than 6,000 airline employees around the world.
Helbig is a regular on the main Spanish catwalk, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, and also on red carpets such as the Goyas.
Teresa Helbig, National Fashion Award 2023: “It is a shot of confidence”
“After 30 years in the profession, this is incredible, it is something that we had never considered. It is satisfying ”, says Teresa Helbig with her nerves on the surface and preparing the next collection that she will present in September during Madrid fashion week.
An award for a career “doing something we like. It has never been fashionable to make jewelery dresses, to work with surpluses, to claim craftsmanship. The prize supposes a shot of confidence”.
“We are doing school so as not to lose trades that quickly disappear with fashion. The desire, having that unique look that we have, makes everything go forward ”, she points out.
