València (EFE).- The spokesperson for Iniciativa-Compromís, Alberto Ibáñez, assured this Saturday that they are beginning to negotiate a possible alliance with Sumar to contest the general elections on July 23 within a framework of “discretion, prudence and calm despite the fact that the calendars are very short”.
Ibáñez made these statements before the National Committee for Initiative-Compromís was held, which meets for the first time after the elections on May 28, in which Compromís lost two deputies in Les Corts, its presence in the Consell and the mayor’s office of Valencia, and the call for the general elections on July 23.
During the National Table, the spokespersons for the formation, Aitana Mas and Alberto Ibáñez, have encouraged citizens to “protect what has been achieved in the last eight years with the determination to go further”.
The results demand self-criticism
According to the spokesperson, the results obtained on May 28 “require self-criticism”, since “going from the government to the opposition requires a major rethinking: we have to see why the left as a whole have been unable to mobilize”.
“We have not risen up in a country of the right,” he indicated, adding that if the voting trajectory from 2019 to 2023 is analyzed, “the problem has been that we have not been able to excite a part of the left.”
Don’t miss a single ballot
During the National Table, the proposal to negotiate “a possible alliance with Sumar that allows no ballot to be lost on July 23 and that, beyond the extreme right and bipartisanship, there is a illusion ballot that draws a horizon of a different, more sustainable, more feminist and fairer country”.
“It is what we are going to transfer with prudence, discretion and with a political debate that puts what, the program, at the center of the public debate”, he stressed.
Asked if next Wednesday the coalition’s position regarding its alliance with Sumar will be known, Ibañez said that “it will depend on the times. What we know is that there is very little time left, but we won’t know if it will be Wednesday or Thursday.
“This is not the time for demands but for coherence”
“Negotiations are beginning to be made with the discretion that these things require for them to go well, with caution and generosity with all the participating parties and allies in order to allow this possible candidacy,” he explained.
Regarding whether any requirement is made to reach an alliance, he considers that “this is not the time for demands but for coherence. I believe that Compromís represents the Valencian actor who has best known how to read Sunday’s results and at the same time we are very aware that we must go further”.
“That means incorporating, adding allies in a shared country horizon that works from illusion, hope but also making it clear that in this country the extreme right is not going to be able to do what it wants.”
If a name has been put on the table, it has been reckless
Asked about the people who could head the lists in the Compromís environment, he said that what they have transferred from the Compromís and Iniciativa group “is that this is not the time to talk about who but to talk about what and how”.
“The prudence of not putting names on the table must be a shared requirement, which we have always put to the rest of the actors and we are going to comply scrupulously. If someone has put a name on the table, it has been imprudent, ”he has concluded her.
