San Sebastian, (EFE). The investigation into the deaths of a man and a woman that occurred this Tuesday in the Gipuzkoan town of Orio points to the possibility that the former shot the girl with a sawed-off shotgun and subsequently ended her life, sources have informed EFE. of the case.
At first, the possibility was raised that the deaths were the result of the explosion of a device hidden in a package, although this hypothesis has now been completely ruled out after the finding of a sawed-off shotgun by the Ertzaintza.
According to the Basque Department of Security, the events could be an episode of sexist violence, since both deceased had maintained a sentimental relationship.
The event was recorded at 5:20 p.m. on Arrantzale de Orio street, outside a children’s park.
Neighbors have heard a noise similar to an explosion, after which the bodies of the two victims with head injuries have been found next to a bench located outside the park.
The woman’s body was sitting on the bench, while the man’s was lying on the ground.
The Basque Department of Security has officially reported that “a deflagration” had taken place, without offering any further information.
An hour before, the deceased had had coffee “as always” in a bar near the place where the shots were later fired.
This was reported to EFE by the owner of the Aurrera de Orio bar, where the deceased, in his fifties and a native of the town, used to mingle.
The owner of the establishment, who had known the man for more than twenty years, recalled that this Tuesday he was at his premises twice, one around 2:30 p.m. or 2:45 p.m., and the other around 3:50 p.m.
“He will have left here around 4:30 p.m. and this -the event- will have passed about an hour after leaving the bar to drink his decaffeinated cortado as always,” the witness recalled.
Shortly after the incident, the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, alluded to male violence as a possible cause of the deaths.
The Basque president began his speech at a PNV rally in Basauri (Bizkaia) with an allusion to the event, which occurred, he said, “supposedly because of sexist violence.”
After expressing his pain and solidarity with the relatives of the deceased, he asked those present to observe a minute of silence.
The Orio City Council, governed by EH Bildu, has called an emergency meeting of the municipal groups tomorrow to discuss the case.
