Madrid, May 13 (EFE).- Members of the Mother’s Rebellion movement have demonstrated this Saturday in around twenty countries to demand climate justice and more actions against the climate crisis, and in Madrid several mothers with their children have gathered in a central square, where the participants have chanted slogans and carried posters.
Sitting on a blue cloth and in a circle, mothers, fathers and children chanted in Plaza Isabel II, in front of the Opera House, slogans such as: “We are the rebellion against extinction”; “The time has come to rebel against extinction”; “not one degree more and not one species less” and “we want climate justice and we want it now” or “we want climate justice for our children”.
In this first peaceful climate action in which a dozen people participated promoted by Mother’s Rebellion, the entity’s spokesperson in Madrid, Rita Kunzler, explained in statements to EFE that in Spain they have “joined the movement very recently, but with this action that is carried out this May 13 in some twenty countries they want to “demand governments for more climate action.”
According to Kunzler, “governments make promises not to exceed 1.5 degrees of temperature”, as included in the Paris Agreement to limit the temperature of the planet, “but they are not fulfilled”.
Scientists “see that nothing is being done to reduce emissions” against global warming, despite the IPCC recommendations to reduce them by 50% by 2030, he stressed, and “rather they are increasing, like last year in Spain with 9%”.
“If you look at the data, we are already seeing consequences such as drought, with the impossibility of growing certain foods; with an unacceptable heat, which prevented the children from having classes in the classrooms last year, because they could not stand the temperatures”, Kunzler indicated.
“We are experiencing temperatures from June to April, we are doing very badly and all mothers are very scared, because it is not the future we want for our children,” he stressed.
“We are seeing the very serious consequences of inaction, scientists have been alerting governments that action must be taken since the 1970s, 1980s, and they ignore them,” he insisted. “Economic results always come first, but in the end the economy is also going to collapse, if there is no drinking water and crops, the climate is the foundation of society,” he added.
When my children are my age, what planet will they have?” Kunzler wondered before emphasizing that they are fighting for “a future” for future generations.
“We are rebelling for life”, Carmen assured, “a mother in rebellion, because it is rebellion or extinction” if civil society does not react, because governments are not up to the task, no matter how many pacts they have signed and many agreements, They continually break them.”
“We cannot trust the governments to resolve this situation,” he asserted, later stating that the companies continue with their “business as usual” (business as usual), and “so it is clear that we are going to disaster.”
For this reason, he has called for the mobilization of civil society, otherwise “we run the risk of becoming extinct, because this situation affects us directly.”
Madres Rebelión España, is part of the international movement Mother’s Rebellion, and of the more global Extinction Rebellion, in which Youth for Climate, Scientists for Climate or Teachers for the Future also participate, and is made up of mothers, aunts, grandmothers, daughters and parents who demand that the rulers accelerate the climate fight.
