Enrique Bermúdez I Sevilla, (EFE).- The best paid Andalusian mayors are in the largest cities in the region, especially in the capitals, with a table led by the councilors of Seville, Almería and Málaga, who surpass the president of the Board, and with some “surprise guests”, who rule in small towns with significant salaries.
According to the latest data from the Treasury on their salaries, which correspond to those of 2021, for which they have risen since then, the mayor of Seville (who that year was the socialist Juan Espadas) heads the list with almost 89,000 euros, followed by the mayor from Almería (who was the adviser of the PP Ramón Fernández-Pacheco), with more than 83,000 euros, and from the councilor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre (PP), with more than 82,000 euros.
The three earned more than the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, who has a salary of 71,600 euros consigned in the Andalusian budgets for 2023. The remuneration of the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, exceeds 90,000 euros for this year.
The exception of Marbella
In the Treasury data there are exceptions, since, for example, the mayoress of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, received less than 20,000 euros from the City Council because she is not dedicated and her salary is received as a senator, with which her annual salary would exceed 100,000 euro.
In the rest of the Andalusian capitals, salaries drop one notch, as is the case of the socialist mayors of Huelva, Gabriel Cruz (72,000 euros), and of Jaén, Julio Millán, who earns about 70,000 euros.
Below are the mayors of Granada, Paco Cuenca (PSOE), and of Córdoba, José María Bellido (PP), who are around 60,000 euros.
The councilor of Cádiz, José María González “Kichi”, was not yet paid that year by the City Council but by the Cádiz Provincial Council, although last year he already began to receive his remuneration from the municipal entity, less than 39,000 euros in total.
Among the highest salaries in Andalusia is the mayor of Roquetas de Mar (Almería), Gabriel Amat, who earned almost 81,100 euros, which also places him above the president of the Junta and most capital mayors.
There is a select group of aldermen who are between 60,000 and 70,000 euros, the majority in highly populated towns in the province of Malaga (Vélez-Málaga, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Nerja), next to the Sevillian town of Dos Hermanas. However, there is no data for one of the main Andalusian cities, Jerez de la Frontera.
The club of 50,000 euros
Around 50,000 euros appears a large but diverse group of Andalusian mayors, since they are mostly made up of councilors from large municipalities but there are also some from small towns that on some occasions slightly exceed 2,000 inhabitants.
The “best paid” of the small towns in Andalusia are the mayor of La Palma del Condado (Huelva), with almost 54,000 euros for a town of less than 11,000 inhabitants; and the mayor of Pinos Puente (Granada), with almost 51,000 euros in a town of about 10,000 inhabitants.
Most of the “50,000 club” are mayors of important municipalities by population in all provinces, many of them in Malaga and Seville.
Below that figure but close to 50,000 euros, the small municipalities of La Puebla de Cazalla (Seville), Alcaudete (Jaén) and Pulpí (Almería) stand out, all of them with just over 10,000 inhabitants but with salaries similar to those of the councilors of large towns that, at least, triple their population.
The mayors of Quesada (Jaén), Herrera (Seville), Órgiva (Granada) or Viator (Almería), also earn more than 45,000 euros per year with some 6,000 inhabitants in their towns. EFE
