Toronto (Canada) (EFE)
Batet, who this Sunday ends an official visit to Canada during which he has met with the presidents of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, and the Senate, George Furey, Canadians, as well as with ministers of the Prime Minister’s government, Justin Trudeau , told Efe that in the face of these threats, alliances between democratic countries are necessary.
“We see it very clearly that all those who want to destabilize and question the institutions are somehow connected and work in a network and globally. And therefore, to be effective, we have to do the same, ”he explained.
“You can do it at the national level to defend democratic institutions. But of course you are much more effective if you do it with alliances. We see it with the European Union, which has faced two huge crises – a pandemic and now the war in Ukraine – united, with joint policies, ”he added.
The president of the Spanish Congress of Deputies said that both Rota and Furey and the rest of the Canadian politicians with whom she has met share the same analysis and conclusion.
“The diagnosis is clear and shared,” he said.
“And from there can arise the deepening of ties that allow those countries with consolidated democracies to weave complicity and also work in a network to be stronger, more powerful and, above all, not allow our democracies to falter,” he continued.
Socialist politics also pointed out that all democratic countries face the same threats, with “groups that seek to destabilize institutions, that have anti-system behavior and, therefore, anti-democratic behavior.”
“We must unite, work together, to ensure that democracy continues standing,” insisted Batet, who considered these threats very serious.
