If only Spanish citizens are taken into account – without those arriving from other countries, who are younger on average – the total age of the population is 49 years and nine months in Asturias, 49 years and one month in Castilla y León and 48 and a half years in Galicia, while for women it is 51 and a half years, 50 and a half and 50 years and one month, respectively.
Widespread rise since the turn of the century
Since the year 2000, the community in which the average age of the population has increased the most is the Canary Islands, practically seven years, followed by Asturias and Galicia (5 years and eight months) and Andalusia and Extremadura (five years and four months).
More than the average (four years and two months) it has also increased in Castilla y León (five years), in Cantabria and the Basque Country (four years and 10 months) and in the Valencian Community (four years and four months), and less than the average in Murcia (four years, the same as in Ceuta), Madrid (three years and nine months) and the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and La Rioja (around three years and three months).
Where the average age has grown the least is in Aragon, only two and a half years – the same as in Melilla-; in Navarra, two years and seven months; and in Catalonia, two years and nine months.
At the beginning of the century, the average was close to 40 years and no community reached 44 years. The highest data was also noted by Asturias, with 43 years and six months; ahead of Castilla y León (43 years and three months), Aragón, which was then three places higher at 42 years and 10 months, and Galicia (42 years and four months).
So, Canarias was the community with the lowest average age (36 years and six months), followed by Murcia (37 years and almost two months) and Andalusia (37 years and five months), with Ceuta and Melilla at only 34 years. .
