The birthplace of Pedro Velarde, today converted into the Ethnographic Museum of Cantabria, has hosted the first activity with which the figure of Dos de Mayo of this figure and the time in which he lived has been brought closer to the schoolchildren of the municipality.
Accompanied by characters from that time, such as soldiers from the Spanish troops, representatives of the civil population or religious, the little ones have been able to learn how people lived in Camargo around 1808 and how the people faced that time of warfare.
The young Pedro Velarde, from a noble family, who was born in Muriedas in 1779, from where he became an enlightened man and army captain, passed on May 2, 1808 together with the Sevillian captain Luis Daoiz to the history of Spain after his death in front of to the French troops in defense of Madrid, an event that even today, two centuries later, is commemorated in his memory by the municipality where this Cantabrian was born and the capital of Spain, where he became “a hero without a cape”.
The activities of this festival have begun this Friday with a parade of the troops and residents of the town dressed from the time, as well as with the opening of the traditional mountain market, and will end on Tuesday, May 2, with the institutional act of homage to Pedro Velarde and the Heroes of May 2.

The zarzuela and the theater will also be present at this celebration, which will be accompanied by a mountain market. The activities of this festival have begun this Friday with a parade of the troops and residents of the town dressed in period clothing, as well as the opening of the traditional mountain market.
Tomorrow, Saturday, there will be numerous street activities throughout the morning, as well as traditional games and battle games in the Plaza de la Constitución, as well as the traveling comic show of the group Les Enfants.
