In a gala marked by the claims of historical memory, the celebration of the Hispanic and music, Santiago Miter’s film about the historic trial of the leadership of the last Argentine military dictatorship also won the best actor award for Ricardo Darín and those with the best script, art direction and education in values.
The Spanish “As bestas”, a rural thriller that reflects on violence, won the prizes for best director for Rodrigo Sorogoyen, best supporting actor, for Luis Zahera, best editing and best sound.
The prizes for best leading actress, Laia Costa, and best supporting actress, Susi Sánchez, for her work in “Cinco lobitos”, the first film by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa that talks about motherhood, also remain in Spain.
Meanwhile, the prize for the best Ibero-American comedy is divided between Spain and Argentina, since it was for “Official Competition”, a satire on egos in the world of cinema directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat and starring Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez.
Best First Feature
The Chilean “1976”, a drama with hints of a thriller set in the darkest years of the dictatorship in that country and directed by the also actress Manuela Martelli, was consecrated as best first film and the Bolivian “Utama”, by Alejandro Loayza, it won for best photography and best music.
The Platinum for Best Animated Film travels to Mexico, for “Águila y Jaguar, los guerreros legendarias”, a post-apocalyptic story directed by Mike R. Ortiz and for Best Documentary, to Cuba, for “El caso Padilla” by Pavel Giroud .
The Colombian “News of a kidnapping”, best series
In the series section, the big winner was “Noticia de un kidnapping”, an adaptation of the homonymous book by Gabriel García Márquez, which won four awards: best series, best creator, best leading actress (Cristina Umaña) and best actress in a cast (Majida Issa).
Behind this project are Gabo’s son, Rodrigo García, and the Chilean Andrés Wood, who received the Platinum award for best creator of a series or miniseries.
The Platinum for best actor in a series went to the Argentine Guillermo Francella, for “El encargado”, a comedy also signed by the duo Cohn/Duprat; and another Argentine, Alejandro Awada, won the award for best supporting actor for “Iosi, the repentant spy”, a series created by Daniel Burman.
Benicio del Toro, Platinum of Honor
Upon receiving his 2023 Platinum Honor Award, Puerto Rican actor and producer Benicio del Toro vindicated the diversity and authenticity of Latino characters in Hollywood in the face of stereotypes, a task in which “there is still much to be done.”
“Latinos are not a monolith, we are not all the same,” said the protagonist of titles such as “Traffic” (2000), “Usual Suspects” (1995) or “21 Grams” (2003), distinguished with the honor award for to be one of the great Hispanic talents in Hollywood and a Latino representative throughout the world.
Del Toro, who defined Madrid as “the capital of the Hispanic world”, received the award from the president of EGEDA, the Spanish copyright management entity, Enrique Cerezo, and with the audience at the IFEMA Palace on their feet.
The Platino Awards, organized by EGEDA and the Ibero-American audiovisual federation FIPCA, were awarded at a gala held at the IFEMA Madrid Municipal Palace, with more than 1,800 guests and 200 accredited journalists.
Presented by the Colombian actress and singer Carolina Gaitán, the Mexican comedian Omar Chaparro and the Spanish actress Paz Vega, the gala included numerous musical performances, such as those of the Colombian Sebastián Yatra, the Cuban Lucrecia and the Spanish Blanca Paloma, who dedicated her performance to Carlos Saura.
