New York (EFE).- Democrats and Republicans got into a discussion in New York regarding the imputation of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) by the District Attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, during an unusual visit of the Judiciary Committee of the US Congress.
Republicans took the opportunity to accuse Bragg of pursuing Trump instead of pursuing a tougher crime policy.
To which the Democrats responded by accusing the Republicans of defending the former president instead of focusing on gun violence.
Jordan’s support for Trump in New York
During the visit of this judicial committee, which usually holds its meetings in Washington, and which traveled to New York to speak about the “victims of violent crimes in Manhattan”, the chairman of the committee, Republican Jim Jordan, began his speech by charging against Bragg.
“In this country, Justice is supposed to be blind (…). However, here in Manhattan, the scales of Justice are weighed down by politics. For the district attorney, Justice is not blind, it tries to look for opportunities to further a political agenda, a radical political agenda,” Jordan said.
The president of the committee still wanted to be clearer, assuring:
“Instead of enforcing the law, the district attorney is using his office to carry out the orders of left-wing campaign financers,” in a clear reference to businessman George Soros, whom Trump accuses of being after his accusation, which the former president and his supporters describe as a “witch hunt”.
In return, the Democratic congressman and former chairman of the Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler assured:
“We are here today, in Lower Manhattan, for one reason only. The chairman (of the committee) is carrying out the orders of Donald Trump. The Republicans on the committee designed this hearing to intimidate and discourage the duly elected District Attorney in Manhattan from doing the job his constituents elected him to do.”
Nadler added that the committee is using its offices and resources to “protect its political patron, Donald Trump.”
And he called this view a “shameful abuse of power.”
fear of using the subway
During the meeting, members of the parliamentary committee heard from several victims and relatives of victims of violence who criticized security in the city.
Including the president of the New York Detective Endowment Association, Paul DiGiacomo, who assured that his wife, of Asian origin, and their daughter did not use the subway for fear of being assaulted.
Faced with criticism for the increase in violence – a phenomenon that affects the entire country – brandished by victims and Republican representatives.
The Democrats refuted the criticism with official data, which shows that New York City is one of those with the lowest rate of violence per 100,000 inhabitants.
Fight insecurity
The discussion about the visit of the Committee overflowed the walls of the room where they met and several politicians, including the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, held a press conference with Nadler, in which he assured that the objective of the visit should be be to focus on the fight against illegal firearms trafficking and not the legal vicissitudes of Trump.
Prosecutor Bragg charged the committee after it announced that it would travel to New York to address the violence in its district.
And he insisted that according to the latest official data, in the first quarter of the year murders have decreased in New York by 14%, shootings by 17%, home robberies by 21% and robberies of people by 8%.
Trump appeared before a Manhattan judge on April 4, charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records.
With the aim of hiding the payment from three people to buy their silence and prevent them from making public information that could have harmed their chances of being elected president.
