Madrid (EFE) the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
The act is so important for the PSOE that the party’s municipal policy officer, Alfonso Rodríguez Gómez de Celis, has assured that it is “the most important meeting of the Socialists between Congresses.”
However, the municipal conference will offer a partial image of the PSOE, since the attendance of any socialist baron except Ximo Puig, as host, has not been confirmed, and all debates will be limited to the local sphere due to the very nature of the event.
Gómez de Celis has commented that the municipal conference is focused on the mayors, councilors and socialist candidates for the municipal elections in May, while the barons “will be where they have to be, which is carrying out their work and campaigning in their territories”.
The PSOE already reported at the time that before the regional and municipal elections in May there would be a local convention but none of an autonomous nature, although it clarified that the communities that decided to hold their own of these characteristics would have the support and presence of the party at the federal level.
In recent months, the only meeting that has had a broad representation of party leaders has been the Federal Policy Council held in September in Zaragoza, since there were notable absences from the Federal Committee on March 18, such as those of the two barons most critical: Emiliano García-Page and Javier Lambán.
Zapatero and Hidalgo, distinguished guests
At the municipal conference this weekend there will be two prominent guests: former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the mayoress of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.
Specifically, Zapatero will participate in the official opening ceremony today together with the Minister of Finance and Deputy Secretary General of the PSOE, María Jesús Montero, and the Mayor of Castellón de la Plana, Amparo Marco.
The mayoress of Paris will speak in the afternoon in a talk entitled ‘Women and local power’, moderated by the Minister for Territorial Policy and Government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, and in which the president of the association of Portuguese municipalities, Luisa salgueiro; the mayoress of A Coruña, Inés Rey; and the mayoress of Osuna (Seville), Rosario Andújar.
Today there will be three other open talks, one of them on ‘The 2030 agenda’, moderated by the socialist candidate for Barcelona City Council, Jaume Collboni, and in which, among others, the Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera.
In addition, four commissions will be held behind closed doors on municipal issues, the conclusions of which will be debated tomorrow morning at a table moderated by the candidate for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and former Minister of Health, Carolina Darias.
Closing Pedro Sánchez
The President of the Government and leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, will close the municipal convention tomorrow around noon together with Ximo Puig and the candidate for Mayor of Valencia, Sandra Gómez.
The four commissions planned today are that of social, supportive and healthy municipalities (coordinated by the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero); that of sustainable municipalities (coordinated by the mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñoz); that of smart and safe municipalities (coordinated by the PSOE candidate for Madrid City Council, Reyes Maroto) and that of municipalities without a gender gap (coordinated by the mayoress of Toledo, Milagros Tolón).
These four cities, therefore, together with Valencia, will be some of the protagonists of the meeting, whose main objective is the ratification of the framework program for the municipal elections.
A program that, as the PSOE has already advanced, will include measures such as facilitating access to public housing, designing “more feminist” street streets and fining “street harassment” through municipal ordinances, in line with what the law of the only yes is yes.
