Sao Paulo (EFE).- Atlético Mineiro, one of the most traditional teams in Brazil, inaugurated this Saturday its new stadium, Arena MRV, with a party in which nearly 9,000 fans participated, in the city of Belo Horizonte.
The albinegro club organized a party with the presence of artists and a dozen historical players of the entity, who symbolically scored the first goals in the new home of Mineiro, already a reality after almost three years of construction.
The honor of opening the goals was reserved for former soccer players Vavá and Ubaldo, both over 90 years old and who scored from the penalty spot in one of the most emotional moments of the ceremony, which was also attended by the president of the Confederation Brazilian Football (CBF), Ednaldo Rodrigues.
The fans were also able to witness the traditional marking of the white lines on the pitch.
With capacity for 46,000 spectators and equipped with LED screens measuring 144 square meters each, Arena MRV is 100% owned by Mineiro and aims to be the “most modern and technological” football stadium in Latin America.
Its construction marks a new page in the history of the Belo Horizonte club, which once again has its own exclusive home after 50 years.
We will have to wait to roll the ball in the stadium
In recent seasons, the team has played at Mineirao or Raimundo Sampaio, better known as Estadio Independencia.
However, ‘Galo’ fans will still have to wait to see their idols play in the new fiefdom, something that is expected to happen only from the second half of this year, as the club still needs some licenses from the Mayor’s Office to be able to operate
Atlético Mineiro, currently led by Argentine coach Eduardo Coudet, has already won a title this year, the Campeonato Mineiro, and will still fight to win the Brazilian Championship, which starts this Saturday, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil.
