Santander (EFE) ) is working on returning it to the sea in June.
The anchoring of the buoy already broke a year ago, leaving the installation adrift, for which the ropes, shackles and the installation of railway wheels had to be repaired, which serve as a counterweight to keep the buoy fixed.
This was reported to EFE by the head of the IEO, Raquel Somavilla, who specified that one of the anchorages, which includes ropes and shackles, had a factory defect and one of the ropes has been cut.
It happened three weeks ago, he points out, after the oceanographic and fisheries research vessel ‘Ángeles Alvariño’ returned this measurement beacon to the sea at the beginning of March.
The IEO is working at its Santander facilities to replace and replace the affected parts, so it hopes to anchor the buoy again in June.
Second buoy in the Cantabrian
The installation provides “very high quality” data on the temperature, waves or environmental quality of the environment that are used in practice by the Port of Santander, the fishing sector or tugboats.
Also by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which uses this data on waves, atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperatures to establish its meteorological prediction models.
The IEO is working on the construction of a second buoy, which would cost approximately 100,000 euros and financed with European funds that are already assigned to the institute.
The objective of this center is to have two buoys in the Bay of Biscay so that there is always one in the sea when maintenance work must be carried out or due to storms there is an accident.
